After forty years working in the furniture business and with it's customers this is what I have concluded.
First and most important is that furniture looks smaller in the store. Many times people get the furniture in their home and are disappointed that it isn't the right size and that doesn't fit. Make sure you measure ahead of your purchase to make sure you have the right size for your room or vision.
Second: Don't get confused your priorities confused. Are you looking for comfort, style, long lasting quality, price? Try asking yourself questions like these to make sure you get exactly what your looking for.
Third: With furniture always read the warranties. Even if you never use them warranties give you an idea of quality. For instance, is the recliner mechanism warranted for one year, five or a lifetime. I prefer non-prorated warranties on mattress'; in other words, if you have a problem do you have to pay for your use of the mattress to get it fixed (prorated) or is it free' (non-prorated) warranty; fix or replacement is free?
Forth: On average men are better at measurements and on average women are better at color, style, ambiance and fabric choices.
Fifth: FOR the woman ---- Men need their head supported! Men have heavier heads than women.
If a man doesn't have a chair that supports his head he will lay on the sofa.
If one of your priorities is style there are a few high back chairs, usually recliners that are tall backed, but tailored and not too wide. If your man is “huge” you need a “huge” chair. You picked him; I suggest you get a chair that fits him and that will free up the rest of the room for 'your' style. On the other hand, many times men pick too big of a chair. The head should be above the back of the chair. The recliner is too short and uncomfortable if the feet dangle way out from the footrest.
Sixth: FOR the men ---- On average woman are much better than you at color, fabric, style and keeping a certain mood to the room. Some men are good at this but not the majority. So men; take the back seat; you don't have to be charge on this decision. By the time men are eighty-four they just have a seat and let the woman go; like dress shopping. One exception is “ your” chair or recliner!
Seventh: Decorating 101 ---- It seems that people who have North and East facing rooms have walls, flooring and furniture in warm colors. If South facing we lean toward cool colors (blues and/or greens). West facing have a mix. I have noticed some South facing rooms that are all browns and tans seem unpleasant when that winter sun shines directly into the room. All decorating guidelines are meant to be broken; I had one couple tell me they were never home during the day, so no matter.
